There is no global registry of Loop usage. HearFinder uses a conservative estimate based on the global hearing-aid population, telecoil availability, and exposure to loop-equipped public spaces.
Methodology: HearFinder estimateNo organization currently maintains a complete worldwide registry of hearing-loop installations or annual users. Published industry sources describe hearing loops as installed in millions of locations worldwide. HearFinder therefore uses 2M+ as a conservative installation estimate.
WHO estimates that more than 400 million people could benefit from hearing aids and that roughly 17% currently use them. HLAA reports that about 70% of hearing aids include a telecoil. Using these figures as reference points, together with a deliberately conservative assumption about annual use of loop-equipped public spaces, HearFinder estimates that at least ~10 million people may benefit from hearing loops in a typical year.
These figures are directional estimates intended to illustrate scale, not an official global census.
A quiet accessibility breakthrough
For decades, hearing loops turned a personal hearing device into a ready-to-use venue receiver.
The stage, lectern or service counter could sound much closer than it physically was.
Telecoil users could listen through their own device—discreetly, without pairing an app.
A single installed loop can serve many listeners in places of worship, theaters, transit and classrooms.
How it works
The loop bypasses much of the distance, echo and room noise between the sound source and the listener.
From invention to infrastructure
Joseph Poliakoff patents a magnetic induction loop; a British hearing aid soon incorporates a telecoil.
Loops spread through schools and places of worship, especially in Europe, as telecoil hearing aids became more practical.
IEC 60118-4 defines performance requirements so installed systems can deliver useful, intelligible sound.
The current situation
Loops remain in theaters, transit, worship spaces, schools, healthcare settings and service counters worldwide.
Your hearing device needs an activated T program. Without one, ask whether the venue has a loop receiver and headphones.
Auracast is emerging, but existing loops and telecoils will remain important during a long transition—not disappear overnight.
At a venue: look for the ear-and-“T” loop symbol, switch to your T setting and ask staff if the system is on.
